As a local Calgary snow removal company, we get asked a lot of questions about snow removal. So here are some of our popular ones and their answers:
1. How Often Should The Snow Be Cleared?
The answer to this question is quite simple. As often as you possibly can.
By not clearing your snow as soon as possible you allow ice to build up on all of your surfaces like your driveway and sidewalk. By clearing it right away, and clearing it often, you help save yourself the back-breaking effort of breaking through the ice after it builds up.
2. Should I Use Ice Melt on My Driveway?
This is a complicated answer, but the short answer is no.
Ice melt can do irreparable damage to your driveway and walkways. You’re better to clear your walkways regularly, as soon as it snows. Of course, that can be time-consuming, so if you would like to still avoid ice, without having to shovel every day, consider hiring a Calgary snow removal company like us. That way you can ensure your walk is cleared every day without having to use ice melt or get out in the cold and shovel.
Note: If you’re wanting to know more about how ice melt can affect your walkways long and short term, check out this article we wrote about that exact thing!
3. Does the City of Calgary Have Any Snow Removal bylaws?
Yes, they do! Knowing the local bylaws can help be prepared for when the snow does fly. In Calgary, you have to completely clear both your driveway and the sidewalk in front of your house within 48 hours. You also can not shovel that snow onto the street, but rather onto your own property somewhere.

4. My Driveway is Covered in Ice! How Do I Fix It?
One of the primary causes of ice in driveways is the accumulation of snow. By not shovelling and allowing the snow to pack you end up with an ice layer underneath the snow. This ice, formed by the high pressure and weight of snow, vehicles, people, etc. can be extremely hard to clear. You will have to use an ice scraper and scrape it all off.
To prevent the formation of this ice layer in the first place we recommend you shovel your driveway as soon as possible, and as often as possible. This will keep your ground bare and won’t allow the snow to build up and create the hard to deal with ice layer.
5. This Seems Like a Lot Of Work. Can’t Someone Do It For Me?
It is a lot of work. But there are solutions! The easiest, and the one we recommend, is to hire a professional to help you clear your sidewalks and walkways. It can be overwhelming at first to find the right company, but there are two things to keep in mind when looking.
- Local. You want someone who lives in the area and knows your snowfall levels and how best to deal with them.
- A monthly professional. When looking for someone to clear your snow you will have the option of paying one monthly fee, or per job. We always recommend monthly. Check out this article for why.
